Having to line up opposite of North Carolina A&T's 6'6 235 pound Defensive end Darrly Johnson is every offensive tackle's worst nightmare. The Savannah, Georgia native is a athletic beast and is one of the best defensive lineman the FCS has to offer. Long and lean with a 103-inch wingspan DJ is built more like a basketball power forward than a defensive end; and with a 4.7 40 yard dash time, Johnson's speed is often way too much to handle for opposing offensive tackles. With the already impressive physical tools, speed, power, and mechanics, Johnson's potential is through the roof; with a skill set that reminds me of a Miami Dolphin legend Jason Taylor.
As a high schooler Johnson attended Camden County under Welton Coffey. DJ was such a athlete that he played defensive end and tight end in high school; but after getting injured his senior season Johnson's recruitment began to cool off while he recovered.
“A&T was really my only choice,” Johnson said. “I didn’t have any offers at all before signing day. I got the offer after, signed late. I’m just glad they looked at me and found me. I really don’t know where I would be today without A&T.”
After red shirting the 2015 season, the following season in 2016 Johnson played in all 12 games for the Aggies but with no starts. Making 22 tackles (10 unassisted), 6 ½ tackles for loss and two sacks. The following season however, Johnson Jr would have the breakout season he worked so hard for .
In 2017 as a red shirt sophomore Johnson dominated his opponents finishing with 6.5 sacks, tying with fellow teammate Same Blue for the team's highest, and a very impressive and productive 15.5 tackles for loss. Not only could Johnson rush the passer, and stop the run Johnson showed his versatility batting down 3 passes and his play making ability causing 4 force fumbles. What makes Darrly Johnson Jr so special is his high motor and ability to show up big time in critical games.
On Sept 16. Against FBS school UNC Charlotte, DJ finished with six tackles (two unassisted), 1.5 sacks and broke up a pass in the Aggies 35-31 upset win. Johnson's get off the ball is insanely fast, Whether it's his long arms, quickness or sheer power Darryl Johnson will embarrass you.
In 2017 DJ helped anchor the MEAC's best defense all the way to a HBCU celebration bowl championship. Earning All MEAC first team honors, while being named a SBN Black College All-American. Johnson also received All-America honors by the American Football Coaches Association and BoxToRow …
Expect for a monster 2018 season out Darryl Johnson, as for he is just scratching the surface of his true talent. The next part of DJ's development is learning a few go to counter moves. As a speed rusher, when Johnson Jr becomes stronger at the point of contact he will become impossible to stop. As part of a stacked defensive line rotation, Darryl Johnson and the rest of the Dogs will be terrorizing quarterbacks all year
